RCN Congress

Connie Mitchell, Home Manager at Aughnacloy House, was selected as one of the four nurses throughout the province to escort Joan Thompson OBE (former Nightingale Nurse) with the Nightingale Ceremonial lamp, which was placed on the altar by the President of the RCN. This was a huge honour as Connie was the only nurse selected from the independent sector to carry out this privileged task.

The service was held last Saturday afternoon, in St. Malachy’s Church, Belfast, marking the commencement of the RCN congress which is being held in Belfast this year for the first time.

The Florence Nightingale Lamp was commissioned in 1993 and paid for by the nurses of Northern Ireland. It is an exact replica of the lamp held in the Florence Nightingale Chapel, Westminister Abbey. The lamp is also incorporated within the Royal College of Nursing Coat of Arms and the Insignia of Office worn by the President of the RCN.
